Flight Test & Certification Engineer (Indep. Contractor)
Job Description:

About Us

LRL Aviation, LLC is a small, focused aviation firm providing flight test and certification services to the aviation industry, with a strong track record in general aviation and special mission aircraft. Our team of engineers, test pilots, and FAA designees (DERs, DARs) delivers results that are technically sound, practical, and regulatory-compliant. We are currently looking for a part-time engineer with an electrical or mechanical background who wants meaningful, hands-on experience in aircraft testing and certification—and who may be interested in pursuing a path as a future DER.

Position Summary

As an independent contractor, and commensurate with experience, the Flight Test & Certification Engineer may support full life cycle flight test operations, data analysis, and FAA certification documentation. This role is ideal for a mechanically or electrically inclined engineer looking to develop expertise in flight testing, aircraft systems, and the certification process—with mentorship toward DER qualifications for the right candidate.

Sample Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning and execution of flight test activities.
  • Support installation, verification, and troubleshooting of flight test instrumentation and aircraft systems (electrical and/or mechanical).
  • Analyze and reduce flight test data; support compliance finding efforts.
  • Draft technical reports, test plans, analyses, and FAA certification documents (e.g., compliance checklists, flight manuals, maintenance manuals, etc.).
  • Gain familiarity with applicable regulations (14 CFR Parts 23/25/27/36) and guidance material to support certification efforts.
  • Collaborate with internal and external engineers, test pilots, DERs, and customers.
  • Support design reviews, safety assessments, and customer meetings.

What We Offer

  • Flexible schedule to accommodate other commitments or continued education.
  • Exposure to real-world flight test operations and FAA certification processes.
  • Mentorship opportunities for engineers interested in pursuing DER qualifications.
  • Small-team environment with direct access to experienced DERs and senior engineers.
  • Pay commensurate with experience.
Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or closely related field).
  • 2+ years of relevant engineering experience in aerospace or a related technical field.
  • Familiarity with aircraft systems, wiring diagrams, or mechanical systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, especially Excel and Word.

Preferred:

  • Experience with FAA certification processes or exposure to 14 CFR regulations.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical or mechanical systems in aircraft or test environments.
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python).
  • Interest in becoming an FAA DER (mentorship opportunities for qualified candidates).
  • Pilot certificate, mechanic’s certificate, or flight test exposure is a plus.

Working Conditions

  • Flexible, part-time hours with a mix of remote and on-site work.
  • On-site presence may be required during test events or system installations.
  • Occasional travel to flight test locations or customer sites may be requested.
